Traveling with Invisalign: 7 Tips to Stay on Track While You’re Away

Whether you’re off on a business trip or taking a long-overdue vacation, keeping your Invisalign routine on track while traveling is easier than you think. At Mend Dental, we work with many patients in Irvine who lead busy, on-the-go lifestyles — and we know travel doesn’t have to disrupt your treatment.

Here are 7 helpful tips to keep your smile moving forward, no matter where your journey takes you.

1. Pack a Travel-Friendly Invisalign Kit

Always bring a small kit with the essentials: your Invisalign case, travel toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and cleaning crystals or tablets. Keeping everything in one pouch makes it easier to stick to your routine, even when you’re on the move.

2. Don’t Forget Your Next Set of Aligners

If you’ll be gone for more than a few days, pack your next set of aligners — and label them clearly. If your change date falls during your trip, you’ll be ready. It’s also a good idea to carry your current aligners in your carry-on bag during flights in case your luggage is delayed.

3. Stick to Your Wear Time

Even when traveling, it’s important to wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day. That means removing them only when eating, drinking (anything other than water), or brushing. Skipping hours can slow your progress or cause discomfort when you return to your trays.

4. Clean Your Aligners Daily

While it can be tempting to skip your routine on vacation, cleaning your aligners daily prevents buildup, odors, and discoloration. Use lukewarm water and a soft brush, or cleaning crystals if you’re short on time or supplies.

5. Stay Hydrated — Especially When Flying

Planes and road trips can dry out your mouth, which may make wearing aligners less comfortable. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and always remove your aligners if sipping anything sugary, carbonated, or acidic.

6. Store Your Aligners Safely

Never wrap your aligners in a napkin or leave them loose in a bag — they can easily get lost or damaged. Use your Invisalign case anytime they’re out of your mouth. It’s also smart to bring a backup case just in case.

7. Let Your Dentist Know You’re Traveling

If you’re a Mend Dental Invisalign patient and planning a long trip, let us know ahead of time. We can schedule your next appointment accordingly or provide extra aligners to keep your treatment on track.
