Five reasons Dr. Sison might recommend a crown.

A filling patches a hole. A crown holds a whole tooth together. When there is not enough healthy tooth left to hold a filling, a crown is the conservative choice, because the alternative is losing the tooth.

1 A crackCracks spread under chewing pressure. A crown holds the tooth together so it does not split.
2 After a root canalA tooth without its nerve becomes brittle. A crown protects it from breaking.
3 A large or failing fillingWhen more filling than tooth is left, re-filling leaves thin walls that crack. If enough tooth remains we choose an onlay; if not, a crown.
4 A worn or broken-down toothGrinding and old damage can leave a tooth short and sharp. A crown restores its shape.

How it works

Two visits, about two weeks apart.

  1. 1Numb and shapeThe tooth is numbed and gently reshaped to make room for the crown. You are numb the whole time.
  2. 2Digital scanAn iTero Lumina scan replaces impression trays and goes straight to the lab.
  3. 3Temporary crownA temporary protects the tooth while your ceramic crown is made. Chew carefully on that side.
  4. 4Fit and bondAbout two weeks later we check the fit, color and bite, then bond it in place. Done.

Crown questions, answered.

A custom cap that covers a damaged tooth completely, restoring its shape and strength. It is made to match your other teeth in color and shape.

When too much of the tooth is missing or cracked for a filling to hold, or after a root canal, which leaves a tooth brittle. A filling only works when enough healthy tooth remains around it. Dr. Sison will show you on the X-ray and explain why.

An onlay covers only the damaged part of the tooth; a crown covers all of it. When enough healthy tooth remains, Dr. Sison prefers an onlay because it keeps more of your natural tooth. When it does not, a crown protects the whole tooth.

No. The tooth is numbed while it is shaped and scanned. You may feel mild sensitivity for a few days afterward.

Usually two. At the first we shape the tooth, take a digital scan and place a temporary crown. About two weeks later the final crown is fitted and bonded.

With normal home care and regular checkups, many years. We check every crown at each exam.
