Do I have gum disease?

Half of adults have it. Most do not know.

Gum disease is common, painless early on, and very treatable when it is caught. If any of these sound familiar, it is worth a look.

  • Bleeding when you brush or floss. Healthy gums do not bleed. This is the earliest and most common sign.
  • Red, puffy or tender gums. Especially along the edge where gum meets tooth.
  • Bad breath that does not go away. Bacteria below the gumline are a common cause.
  • Gums pulling away from the teeth. Teeth look longer, or feel sensitive near the gum.
  • Loose teeth or a changing bite. A later sign that bone support is being lost.
  • You have not had a cleaning in a while. Or you have diabetes, smoke, or gum disease runs in your family.
How it progresses

Three stages. The earlier, the simpler.

Frank checks your gums at every cleaning. Where you are on this line decides what we recommend, and how often we want to see you.

Stage 1Reversible

Gingivitis

Plaque along the gumline irritates the gums. They bleed and look puffy, but the bone underneath is fine.

What we doA thorough cleaning and a better home routine. Usually fully reversed.
Stage 2Manageable

Early periodontitis

Gums start to pull away and small pockets form. Bacteria settle below the gumline where a brush cannot reach.

What we doDeep cleaning with numbing, then maintenance visits every few months.
Stage 3Needs a specialist

Advanced periodontitis

Bone loss is significant, teeth may loosen and gums recede. Still treatable, but this is where Dr. Shah steps in.

What we doSpecialist care: deeper cleaning, grafting where needed, and a long-term plan.
Your periodontist

Dr. Nischit Shah, DDS.

"Gums are where the mouth and the rest of the body meet. Treating them well changes more than a smile."

Dr. Shah is the periodontist on our team, the specialist for gum health, dental implants and the procedures that support them. Practicing since 2018, he is known for a gentle, empathetic approach and for taking the time to explain a diagnosis and every option clearly.

He chose periodontics to help patients understand the connection between the mouth and overall health. He sees patients at mend on an as-needed basis, working from the same records as Dr. Sison and Frank, so your gum treatment, cleanings and any restorative work stay on one plan, in one place.

A specialist, without the second office.

Most general dentists refer gum disease to a periodontist elsewhere, which means new paperwork and a new team. Dr. Shah sees patients at mend as needed, in the same rooms and with the same X-rays and 3D scans as Dr. Sison and Frank, so your cleaning schedule, gum treatment and any implant or crown work stay on one plan.

Most PPO plans cover deep cleanings and periodontal maintenance. We verify your benefits first and give you a written estimate. Patients see Dr. Shah from Irvine, Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Tustin and across Orange County.

A periodontist is a dentist with extra years of training in the gums and the bone that hold your teeth. Dr. Shah places dental implants, repairs receding gums and handles advanced gum disease, while Frank performs deep cleanings and ongoing maintenance. He sees patients here at mend, so you do not need a referral across town.

Bleeding when you brush or floss, gums that look red or puffy, persistent bad breath, gums pulling away from the teeth, or teeth that feel loose. Early gum disease often has no pain at all, which is why we check your gums at every cleaning.

The early stage, gingivitis, is fully reversible with a professional cleaning and better home care. Once it progresses to periodontitis, the damage to bone cannot be undone, but treatment stops it from getting worse and keeps your teeth.

We numb the area first so you stay comfortable. Gums can be tender for a few days afterward. Most patients say it is much easier than they expected.

Once gums have been treated, bacteria return below the gumline faster than in a healthy mouth. Periodontal maintenance, usually every three to four months, keeps them from re-establishing. Frank tracks your gum measurements visit to visit.

Research links gum disease with heart disease, diabetes control and pregnancy outcomes. Treating your gums is good for more than your teeth.

Most PPO plans cover deep cleanings and periodontal maintenance, often at a different rate than a regular cleaning. We verify your benefits and give you a written estimate before any treatment.
