Why a tooth needs a filling

Five reasons a tooth might need one.

Every filling here is the same tooth-colored composite. What changes is why the tooth needs it.

Decay

A cavity

Bacteria have softened a spot in the enamel. Caught early on an X-ray or 3D scan, it is a small filling. Left alone, it grows toward the nerve.

About 40 minutes

A filling at mend, step by step.

Step 1

Numb, gently

A little topical gel first, then a slow, gentle injection. Pick a show while it takes effect.

Step 2

Remove the decay

Only the soft, decayed part is removed. Healthy tooth stays. You'll feel vibration, not pain.

Step 3

Shade, layer, cure

Composite matched to your tooth is placed in thin layers and hardened with a blue light in seconds.

Step 4

Shape & polish

We adjust the bite until it feels like nothing changed, polish it smooth, and you're done.

Why Mend

Small fix now. No crown later.

A filling is the most conservative repair in dentistry, we remove only the decay and keep everything else. Catching it early is the whole point of a six-month checkup.

  • Only the decay comes out. Composite bonds to the tooth, so we drill less than silver fillings require.
  • Shade-matched by eye and by scan. Invisible in photos, invisible in the mirror.
  • Mercury-free, always. We don't place amalgam.
  • Gentle numbing. Topical gel first, slow injection, and nitrous if you want it.
Good to know

Why a small cavity is worth fixing now.

A cavity is decay that has broken through the enamel. It doesn't heal on its own and it doesn't stay small, left alone, it works toward the nerve, and what would have been a 40-minute filling becomes a crown, or worse. Most early cavities don't hurt at all, which is exactly why we find them on X-rays and 3D scans at your checkup rather than waiting for a toothache.

At mend dental in Irvine, Dr. Monique Sison uses tooth-colored composite resin for nearly every filling: it bonds to the tooth, needs less drilling than silver amalgam, contains no mercury, and disappears into your smile. You'll see the cavity on your X-ray with Overjet's AI overlay before we start, and you'll see the finished tooth in a mirror before you leave. Numbing is gentle, Netflix is on, and you're usually back at your desk within the hour.

Filling questions, answered.

It shouldn't. We numb the area first, Dr. Sison is known for gentle injections, and most patients feel only pressure and vibration. Some sensitivity to cold for a few days afterward is normal.

A single tooth-colored filling takes about 30 to 60 minutes and is finished in one visit. Several fillings can often be done in the same appointment.

Modern composite fillings typically last 7 to 10 years or longer with good brushing, flossing and regular checkups. We check every filling at each exam.

Yes. Composite hardens immediately under the curing light, so you can eat as soon as the numbness wears off, usually one to two hours. Chew carefully until then so you don't bite your cheek.

Not automatically. A silver amalgam filling that is intact and sealed can stay. We recommend replacing them only when they crack, leak or show decay underneath, or if you'd like a tooth-colored option.

Most PPO plans cover fillings at 70 to 80 percent after your deductible. We verify your benefits before your visit and give you an exact out-of-pocket estimate.
