Dental implant vs bridge: how I help you choose for one missing tooth.

Both a dental implant and a bridge can replace one missing tooth. The better choice depends on the neighboring teeth, the bone under the gap, your bite, and how long you want the result to last.

Implant and bridge models side by side on a tray

At mend in Irvine, I walk through both options with you on a 3D scan so the tradeoffs are clear before anything starts.

What each option actually does

An implant replaces the missing tooth from the root up. Dr. Nischit Shah, our periodontist, places a titanium post in the bone. After healing, I design and fit the crown on top. It stands on its own, so the teeth beside it are left alone, and because it sits in the bone like a root, it helps keep that bone from shrinking.

A bridge is a false tooth joined to crowns on the two neighboring teeth. There is no surgery. You get a fixed tooth in about two visits. The neighbors are reshaped to hold the bridge, and the bone under the gap is not protected the way an implant protects it.

When a bridge is the honest choice

A bridge often makes sense when the neighboring teeth already need crowns, when you want to avoid surgery, or when an implant is not a good fit for your health or bone. It is usually faster. Most of the work happens in two appointments about two weeks apart, with a temporary in place in between.

I will also flag when a bridge is asking too much of weak neighbors. If those teeth are healthy and untouched, crowning them only to hold a false tooth may not be the most conservative path.

When I lean toward an implant

I lean toward an implant when you want the longest-lasting option, when the neighboring teeth are healthy, and when bone and gum health support placement. An implant does not rely on other teeth. It also helps stop the jaw under the empty space from slowly receding, which nothing else we place does in the same way.

Most healthy adults are candidates. We check bone with a 3D scan and look at gum health first. If bone is thin, a small graft can often make an implant possible. The process usually spans several months and about five to seven appointments, with most of that time spent healing while the implant bonds to the bone.

How we decide together at mend

You stay in one office. Dr. Shah places the implant here when that is the plan. I finish the crown. Frank, our hygienist, and I already track your gum health, so implant or bridge care sits on the same record as your cleanings.

  • Condition of the teeth next to the gap
  • Bone volume and gum health on the 3D scan
  • Bite forces and how you chew
  • Timeline you can work with
  • One written estimate before treatment starts

Many PPO plans cover part of either path. We verify benefits first. Payment plans are available through Sunbit, Cherry and HFD.

Quick answers

An implant usually lasts longest and protects the bone under the gap. A bridge is faster and avoids surgery but relies on the neighboring teeth.

Placement is done with numbing, and most patients describe soreness for a few days rather than pain. Healing is mostly waiting while the implant bonds to bone.

Usually several months and about five to seven appointments, most of that healing time.

You can, but crowning healthy teeth only to hold a false tooth is not the most conservative path. We flag that tradeoff before you decide.
